How It All Started
A Destin native since 1986, Mike Buckingham first came up with the idea for introducing a new BBQ joint to town with the closing of the original Rib Shack in 1995. The absence of “old school BBQ” thereafter left a sense of emptiness in those who appreciated the flavorful food. Over the years, Buckingham, or “Buck” as his friends call him, attended local fundraisers and other events, donating his BBQ talents for catering with his friend, Robbie Phillips. As time progressed, the two discussed opening up a local BBQ restaurant.
In 2013, Buckingham purchased the abandoned St. John Greek Orthodox Church on Harbor Boulevard. His initial intent was to transform the church into a BBQ joint that he would name “Holy Smokes.” Unfortunately, as plans for the building started to get underway, the structural engineer declined to sign off on the building due to its lack of stability. Instead, Buckingham had no choice but to raze the church and build his own little “hole in the wall” restaurant, with the goal of bringing back that “old school BBQ” feel.
In 2014, Buckingham turned his passion into a business when Buck’s Smokehouse opened to the public. His intention was not to focus just on BBQ, but to focus on the smokehouse version of food like smoked fish and other meats, and that’s exactly what he’s doing!
